How did beebag started?
Firstly, thank you for taking interest in beebag! It means a lot to not only the company but also to the world, because we know there’s an eco warrior reading this blog on the other side now. So, who’s ready for story time?

Beebag’s concept was originally created during one of Joshua and Joel’s class assignment, the goal of the then assignment was to create an innovative idea to solve pollution and climate change. Beebag’s co-founders Joshua and Joel has always been an advocate for integrating the “having fun” aspect to whatever they do, be it studying, doing assignments or working out. They believe that unless you truly enjoy what you are doing, it won’t last long because the motivation for doing so doesn’t come from within but it is rather influenced by external causes. With this mindset in mind, they brainstormed different ideas to make reducing pollution and climate change fun and rewarding. After mountains worth of crazy and cringe worthy ideas, they settled down on the concept of “Member Bag”.
The idea was simple, they believe the best way to change consumer behavior is to simply give them incentive to do so. The concept of “Member Bag” arrived from something we all know, a “Member Card” or a “Loyalty Card”. A Member Card simply allows a participating member to collect points and earn special discounts at a specific store. The idea was to integrate the Member Card onto a physical reusable bag so that shoppers will remember to bring their bags the next time they go shopping. They wanted to focus on plastic bag pollution because they found out that many Malaysians own more than a few reusable bags but many don’t use them, because either they left it at home or they left it in their car. The co-founders were no different as well, because they were also guilty of such actions as they find themselves leaving behind their reusable bags from time to time.

Joshua and Joel believed that the main reason behind this, is the lack of incentive to use reusable bags. Currently, the only incentives for shoppers (other than saving the environment) to use a reusable bag is to either avoid the 20 sen penalty charge or when the store doesn’t provide any plastic bag at all. After knowing this, the co-founders strongly believed that consumer behavior can be changed more effectively if they were simply more incentives. This is when the idea of changing consumer behavior through positive reinforcement and gamification slowly came together.
At the time, the thought of turning “Member Bag” into a legitimate business vaguely crossed their mind but the thought was quickly erased as they were inexperienced and were not sure of where to start. Fast forward a year later when the co-founder’s younger brother Jorge, enrolled in a general elective course called sustainable entrepreneurship lead by Dr. Abdul Khaliq Rasheed (who is now one of the co-founders of beebag). During the course, Jorge was tasked with a similar assignment as Joshua and Joel, his assignment was to create a social enterprise focused on solving social issues. Jorge remembered the concept of Member Bag and decided to work around the idea for his assignment. After presenting the idea during class, Dr. Abdul Khaliq Rasheed was very intrigued and offered Jorge if he would like to turn the idea into a legitimate business. And after a few discussion between the 3 brothers and Dr. Abdul Khaliq Rasheed, history was made and beebag was formed.

What is the goal of starting beebag?
As Robert Swan OBE said: “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” The team at beebag strongly believes in this and that is why we have taken our own action to solve plastic pollution, but more importantly, we want to inspire others to do so too! Beebag was founded with one crucial goal in mind, and it is to eliminate single-use plastic pollution through positive reinforcement and gamification. We hope by making it fun and rewarding, we can inspire more people to start their sustainable journey. Time is not a friend when tackling plastic pollution so we have to do it quick.
And with the beebag platform, we want to also raise awareness on plastic pollution and share knowledge on how we can fight this war together. Even though many of us know that plastics are bad, not many of us know about the severity of it. Currently, we produce about 300 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, to put this into perspective, this is equivalent to the weight of the entire human population and we produce this much in just a single year. And with the spike in usage of single-use face masks and online deliveries during the pandemic, it’s just gonna get worse if nothing is done. As Chief Seattle Once said: “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” Our generation is already having a tough time fighting plastic pollution, imagine what the future generation have to deal with. The future generation that has nothing do with this mess will be the ones to experience the toughest challenge from the waste we have created today.

We hope we can start a ripple effect among Malaysians to pick up a sustainable lifestyle by not only providing incentives, but also through sharing information and raising awareness. Many of us will be motivated to start our sustainable journey if we simply know how severe the situation could become for our future generation. That is why we want to share credible and accurate information and data on plastic pollution and climate change and also share interesting topics from creative DIYs to sharing information on how to properly segregate your waste. Rest assured, it is our goal at beebag to make our content interesting and fun to consume.
